Train On The Brain |
Stevie Coyle Sam Bevan on bass,, Kit Walker on keys A year and a half ago former Waybacks frontman Stevie Coyle set out to make a sweet, succinct little instrumental fingerstyle guitar album. Apparently, some one of those Muses we've all heard about (but Stevie, for one, says he had until then only ever had glimpses of) caught wind of this humble plan, and swiftly interposed a rather substantial change in scale as well as a considerably more protracted timetable. But as Stevie himself says, "When the Muses call, you can't just put on the kettle, offer a cup of tea and expect to spend a pleasant afternoon. On this particular visit they moved in wholesale and stayed for months on end." In fits and starts a protagonist appeared, as did a somewhat mysterious plot, as well as organic connections between songs written years apart. "It was quite a ride. What started off over a year ago as a polite little fingerstyle album soon revealed itself to be something more akin to Dark Side Of The Moon, if I may flatter myself by that comparison for just a moment." |

"Ten-In-One" is a concept album, ostensibly about a trip to a sideshow and back. It's a day in the life of one Mr. Oster, a rather unassuming, introspective, Everyman sort of character. And even though it's a very unusual day for him, it turns out to be a very good one. "I'm quite sure the album about other things too," Stevie says, "but I'm not certain what they are." "Myself, I have really missed - this past couple of decades or so - the experience of sitting down with an album that holding the artwork in my hands and listening to the whole doggone thing start to finish. No matter how old we get, there's always some little kid inside us that just wants to be told a good story. So I decided like an album that does just that, both musically and visually. The graphics were created by this young genius down in San Luis Obispo by the name of Jimmy Roberts, and I must say, they are astonishing. And they really help the listener get into the very particular and rather mysterious internal landscape of the protagonist." "It's runaway eclecticism all the way. There are slow, sad pieces and a couple of really up-tempo rockers. There's an Appalachian fiddle tune which magically morphs into an East Indian Jazz Odyssey. There's a little soft shoe number for the "hero theme." There is a Delmore Brothers-style duet sung by a set of Siamese twins. And during one of our hero's reminiscences, we take a little musical trip to the east bank of the Seine. Music written for acoustic guitar gets played on a steam-powered calliope. There's more, believe it or not ... but the whole thing finishes up with a big cast-of-thousands production number in which I got to fulfill a lifelong dream of writing a chorus that has 'na na na' as the lyric." $15 advance $20 Door $25 Reserved Seat To buy tickets: Online: click here |
